In a bizarre example of leftist subversion of the president, Governor Tony Evers of Wisconsin, a Democrat, reportedly instructed state employees to subvert federal immigration agents if they arrived at their workplace, whether or not those agents had a warrant, leading to a stern response from border czar Tom Homan that made Governor Evers panic and attempt to retract his statements.
For context, Governor Evers reportedly made his comments about helping illegal immigrants in a memo that went out to state employees, instructing them not to turn over any documents to ICE agents without an attorney present. In addition, the memo also instructed employees not to answer any questions from ICE agents, even if they have a warrant.
Following the issuing of the memo, Tom Homan reportedly responded on May 1, 2025, during a press conference, where one reporter asked him, “The president signed an executive order this week threatening to defund sanctuary cities. Why not just arrest the leaders who are harboring and shielding illegal aliens, actual terrorists, from deportation?” Homan simply replied, “Wait to see what’s coming.”
Furthermore, another reporter asked Homan to comment on “the Wisconsin governor sending directives to the state agencies to not comply with ICE, actually stop your deportation efforts?” Again, Homan replied, “Wait to see what’s coming.” He then added, “I meant what I said. You can not support what we’re doing, and you can support sanctuary cities if that’s what you want to do. But if you cross that line into impede or knowingly harbor or conceal an illegal alien, that is a felony, and we will treat it as such.”
After Homan made his statements to the press, Gov. Evers responded with a video, in which he backpedaled the statements he made in his memo, saying, “I haven’t broken the law, I haven’t committed a crime, and I’ve never encouraged or directed anyone to break any laws or commit any crimes.”
Moving on, Gov. Evers said that “Republican lawmakers piled on, encouraging the Trump administration to arrest me,” adding that he was receiving “joint threats,” which he asserted “should be the concern of every Wisconsinite and every American who cares about the country and the values we hold here.”
Concluding his statement, Gov. Evers said, “We live in the United States of America, folks. We are a country of laws. The rule of law matters. Following the law matters.” He added that the possibility of being arrested notwithstanding, he will “never be discouraged from doing the right thing.”
After Evers released his memo, radio host Dan O’Donnell, who covered the story when it emerged, shared the memo on X on April 25, 2025, and wrote, “If I were a State of Wisconsin employee, this would seem to be a pretty easy choice. But this memo does raise a very pertinent question: Just how many illegal aliens is the State of Wisconsin employing in violation of federal law?”
