A disgraced J6 prosecutor burst into tears in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee after she was fired for what one conservative commentator called taking “political prisoners” after it was determined that her partisan politics informed her prosecution of individuals involved in the events at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021.
For context, Sara Levine, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary on April 30, 2025, sharing information about her experience working on “about 40 cases” related to J6. Ms. Levine, who was reportedly fired from the Justice Department as a result of her work, cried publicly during her statement and blamed Trump Chief of Staff pick Ed Martin for her firing, drawing the ire of conservatives as a result.
During her testimony, Ms. Levine said that when she left work on a Friday, she received a notification on her phone for a memo “that gave Mr. [Ed] Martin permission to fire probationary employees from the Capitol Siege Section that were moved to other places in the office.” Continuing, Levine said that she did not have a list of the names that were listed in the memo, but that she believed she was “probably on the list.”
Moving on, Ms. Levine explained that after receiving the memo, she received word that “15 U.S. attorneys, assistant U.S. attorneys, had been fired,” including herself. Levine added, “The termination letter I received stated the decision was based on your actions and the prosecution of persons relating to the events that occurred at or near the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.”
Continuing, Levine explained that in a 2025 Executive Order, President Trump had characterized her work “as having involved a grave national injustice that has [been] perpetrated upon the American people over the last four years.” She added, It went on to say that my hiring has hindered the ability of the acting U.S. Attorney Martin to staff his office and furtherance of his obligation to faithfully implement the agenda that the American people elected President Trump.”
Concluding her statement in tears, Levine said that based on the termination letter she received, “Mr. Martin does not understand the role of prosecutor.” The former attorney went on to say, “U.S. attorneys represent the United States of America, not the president firing 15 qualified attorneys.”
When conservative commentator Nick Sortor shared the footage of Levine’s tearful testimony, he showed no mercy, saying, “Cry more, you witch.” Sortor added, “If it were up to me, you’d be in JAIL for what you did to J6ers.” In response, conservatives echoed Sortor’s sentiments in the comments section, with influencer Sarah Smith writing, “I have zero sympathy for Sara Levine! What she did was unacceptable!” Sortor replied, “What she did was take political prisoners.”
Furthermore, in a statement released by the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 30, 2025, Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) used Levine’s firing against Ed Martin, saying that Mr. Martin had repeatedly attacked “law enforcement officers who kept members and staff safe during the January 6 insurrection and the Assistant U.S. Attorneys who were assigned to prosecute the rioters who brutally attacked police officers.”
