Things went terribly wrong for far-left New York Attorney General Letitia James on the night of Thursday, May 8, as she tried hosting a town hall in New York City after the FBI and DOJ announced that she was under investigation for mortgage fraud after a criminal referral was made in relation to a bevy of seemingly quite fraudulent incidents.
As background, Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director William Pulte requested charges be brought against NY AG James in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy AG Todd Blanche in which he wrote, “Pursuant to my authority as Director of the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency (“U.S.Federal Housing” or “FHFA”), I am referring the matter below. As regulator of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Banks, we take very seriously allegations of mortgage fraud or other criminal activity. Such misconduct jeopardizes the safety and soundness of FHFA’s regulated entities and the security and stability of the U.S. mortgage market.”
Giving a few examples of her allegedly illegal behavior, Pulte said, “Based on media reports, Ms. Letitia James has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms. This has potentially included 1) falsifying residence status for a Norfolk, Virginia-based home in order to secure a lower mortgage rate and 2) misrepresenting property descriptions to meet stringent requirements for government backed loans and government assistance.”
In any case, it was then announced by U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III, who is in charge of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York’s Northern District that the FBI was investigating Letitia James over that alleged fraud. He said, “This is being handled at this time by main Justice and the Albany FBI field office.”
He added, “We stand prepared to act in the capacity that we need to when and if we are informed there’s a charge to be made.” He then said, “Unlike Letitia James, who unethically ran around the state campaigning on getting Donald Trump… my office conducts itself in a manner that is proper and professional.”
It was that announcement of the FBI’s investigation of NY AG James that sparked the epic town hall moment, which came when a Trump supporter asked her, “Will you apologize to President Trump and the state of NY for wasting millions of dollars for a witch trial and how does it feel to know that you will be in prison for mortgage fraud?”
That basic question turned the town hall into chaos, as booing erupted from Letitia James’s supporters at the event and she totally refused to answer the question, instead having event security escort the man out of the event despite him merely having asked a question during a town hall.
Watch the incident here:
Speaking in April, as the mortgage scandal reared its head, NYC attorney Pierre Debbas told Fox News Digital that James had indeed engaged in a witch hunt against Trump and that the potential DOJ case against her is “retaliatory.” He began, “The attorney general’s case that was brought against Donald Trump was honestly a pure manipulation of the legal system, and it was laughable.”
Continuing, he said, “To be perfectly frank, this is a retaliatory case brought by the president for what the attorney general did to him over the last several years.” He then added, “Something that’s never taken place in the history of New York that was isolated at one particular person for a politically driven purpose.”
